Do birds excite you as they do Eden to Addo? Then here is an opportunity to make someone happy this season and make Eden to Addo happy at the same time. The Ultimate Companion for Birding Southern Africa, a boxed set of two volumes with over 1400 spectacular photographs of birds, will be sent to you on a donation of R600.00 to Eden to Addo.
Eden to Addo’s chairman, Mike Bridgeford says ” I am totally blown away – what a magnificent publication. It is without doubt the best Southern African photographic Bird book EVER produced! I am lost for suitable words of accolade.”
The book is filled with interesting information on each species, (even for non birders!) rather than the normal ” 3mm brown dot, long beak, fluffed tail” kind of info one normally finds in bird books.
And with the donation we can continue with our vision to connect three mega-reserves by means of natural corridors. In 1917 we will be working on declaring the Keurbooms River Corridor linking the Western section of the Garden Route National Park to the Eastern section, a nature reserve. This is the area where we have been clearing alien vegetation, maily wattle, for the last two and half years releasing 850.000 cubic meters of water into the Keurbooms River for the Plettenberg Bay residents.
But how will this enhance the lives of birds? The lives of birds are inextricably linked to the habitat in which they live, as it determines the availability of their food and shelter. When the habitat is fragmented by ploughed fields and wattle plantations for instance, movement is difficult creating ” island” effects. This results in genetic stasis not only in the birds but also in the flowers they pollinate. Hence the need to establish natural corridors linking protected areas such as the Keurbooms River Corridor.
